Tips and tip menus
How to earn tips as an adult creator without begging: tip menus, suggested amounts, live stream goals, and how to thank people.
Tips are about permission
Most fans will not tip unless they know it is welcome and have an idea of what is normal. A tip menu does both jobs. It gives fans a list of things a tip can mean and a number next to each, which turns a vague "support me" into a specific, easy decision.
Tip menus are standard on cam sites and work just as well on a subscription page. Pin one to your profile or post it regularly.
Building a tip menu
Keep it short, five to ten lines. Mix small items that anyone can afford with a few larger ones that give your big spenders a way to be generous.
Examples of the kind of thing that goes on a menu:
- A thank-you by name in your next post: $5
- Pick the outfit for the next shoot: $10
- A voice message: $15
- A short personalised video message: $25 to $50
- Your name written somewhere in a photo: $30
- A longer custom, priced separately
Price the attention, not the labour. A voice message takes you thirty seconds; it is worth far more than that to the fan. That is not exploitation, it is what they came for.
When fans see several amounts, they pick from the middle. Offer a low, a medium and a high option rather than one number. If you show $5, $20 and $50, you will get a lot of $20s. If you show only $5, you will get $5.
On VestaCreate, fans can tip in credits. One credit is one dollar to them; you receive 75 cents per credit. Because the fan already holds credits, tipping is a single tap, which is exactly where impulse matters.
Tips during live streams
Live streams are where tipping culture comes from. A few things carry over:
- Set a goal for the stream and say what happens when it is reached. People tip toward a visible target.
- Acknowledge every tip by name, immediately. That public thank-you is a large part of why the next fan tips.
- Have a menu of actions tied to amounts for the stream, separate from your general menu.
- Thank the big tipper after the stream, privately, with a message. They remember.
Thank people properly
A tip without a thank-you is the last tip from that fan. Reply within the day, use their name, and mention what the tip was for if it came from the menu. Public recognition for fans who want it, private for those who do not; some fans are tipping precisely because nobody else knows.
Never guilt people into tipping. "Tips keep me going" every day reads as pressure and drives fans away. Make it available, make it fun, make people feel seen, and the tips come.
